MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Canidates must meet the following requirements:

1. AGE REQUIREMENTS

Canidates must be at least 19 years of age on or before the date of the examination to be admitted to the written test. Eligibility for appointment as a Police Officer begins when the candiidate reaches age 20. Candidates who reach their 35th birthday on or before the date of written examination are not qualified except s follows: Candidates may have a perod of military duty or terminal leave up to six (6) years, as defined in Section 243 (10a) fo the Military  Law, deducted from their age for the purpose of meeting the age requirement.

2. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Applicants must be a high school graduate or a holder of a high school equivalency diploma issued by an education department of any of the states of the United States or a holder of a comparable diploma issued by any commonwealth, territory or posssession of the United States or by the Canal Zone or a holder of a report from the United States armed forces certifying successful completion of the test of general education development, high schook level and have successfully completed at least 60 credit hours of study at a regionally accredited or New York State registered two or four year college or university of business school at time of appointment.

One (1) year of active military duty (enlisted, conscripted or reserves) may be sustituted for thirty (30) hours of sixty (60) credit hours.  Non-activated reservists may not substitute reserve time to meet this requirement.

3. DRIVERS LICENSE:

Candidates must possess a valid New York State Operator's License at time of appointment and maintain for the duration of employment.

4. CITIZENSHIP:  United States Citizenship is required at time of appointment. It is necessary for admission to the examination.

5.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical and Medical Requirements:

Candidates must meet the medical and physical fitness requirements as prescribed by the New York State Municipal Civil Service Commission.

NOTE:  Conviction of a felony will bar, and conviction of a misdemeanor or other offense may bar, examination and appointment.

Police Officer

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This work consists primarily of routine patrol tasks in an assigned district during a specific shift with personal responsibility for the maintenance of order, enforcement of laws and ordinances, and the protection of lives and property. The work also involves assisting in the investigation of criminal offenses and apprehension of criminals. There is considerable independent responsibility for the exercise of soud judgment in emergencies. However, ordinary procedures and special assignments are usually carried out under the immediate supervision of a superior officer. The Police Officer performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  
Patrols a specific district or beat on foot, on a motorcycle, or in a radio crusing car;
Checks door and windows of the unoccupied businesses and residential property;
Investigates suspicious activities and makes arrests for violation of federal and state laws and local ordinances;
Escorts prisoners to jail and to court;
Watches for and makes investigations of wanted and missing persons and stolen cars and property;
Directs traffic and marks cars for overtime parking;
Maintains order in crowds and attends parades and other public gatherings;
Answers questions for and directs the public;
Reports serious defects in streets and in related matters requiring the attention of the Department oF Public Works;
Broadcast radio messages;
Makes criminal investigations when assigned as a detective;
Makes daily reports of activities;
May prepare reports and perform clerical duties relating to the police function;
Operates a patrol wagon.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Ability to communicate with all persons in a manner that is consistent with police professionalism; good knowledge of the use of weapons and their capabilities; thororugh knowledge of the geography, buildings and the community in the patrol area; good knowledge of what constitutes and how to safeguard and process evidence; good knowledge of Peanl Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Alcohol Beverage Control Law and local rules, regulations and ordinances; working knowledge of investigative techniques, working knowledge of legal terminology; ability to properly operate a patrol car and radio equipment; ability to recognize potential weapons; ability to deal with people under stress; ability to notice things ina person's conduct indicating something may be wrong; ability to assiss extent of physical injury; ability to apply first aid; skill in the use of weapons; skill in the application of self defense techniques; physical conditon commensurate with the demands of the position.
